Batman: Year One looks like the best superhero film of 2011

The trailer for DC Animation’s adaptation of one of the Dark Knight’s most beloved story arcs should give Batfans goosebumps…

For those not familiar, Batman: Year One is a four issue arc written by Frank Miller in 1987. At the time, Miller was fresh off the success of The Dark Knight Returns (my person fav) and Miller has since found success in Hollywood with adaptations of 300 and Sin City.

Speaking of Hollywood, Batman: Year One has influenced damn near every one of Batman’s non-Burton/Schumacher theatrical appearances released in my lifetime. Batman: Mask of the Phantasm flashes back to its settings and largely adheres to Miller’s “Dark Knight Universe,” and both Batman Begins and The Dark Knight adapt many elements and employ characters so similarly, you can’t avoid seeing Year One’s influence.

How’s that for organic exhaust?!

More importantly, Year One is coming from DC’s incredible animation division, who have consistently cranked out direct-to-dvd films of such high quality – Justice League: The New Frontier, Superman: Doomsday, Green Lantern: Emerald Knights, just to name a few – it puts Hollywood to shame.

DC’s animated films tend to do way better service to their properties, and although I’d expect most reading should be familiar know this already: This is not necessarily “Kiddie fair.” So far, DC DtD toons have pulled no punches, they’re ferociously dark, people die, and… there will be blood. Obviously, I can’t wait for Batman: Year One, since it has been hailed as one of, if not THE greatest Bat sagas, every put to page. Now I gotta catch up on the rest.

  1. Chris,
I’m excited for this movie as well. The comic was great. I too liked the Dark Knight Returns better, Batman rage maiming people is great fun to read. Are you looking forward to the DC Reboots?
