Oh...wow. I have told people about this Christmas special for so many years, and gotten so many blank looks, that I had begun to believe it was a nightmare of my own invention. "No, no! Kermit introduces the story, but he's not in it...yeah, they die. They actually die if people see them. It's horrifying and heartbreaking, but I think that's what made Jim Henson special. He understood that children already know about death and heartbreak, and so any kids' story that ought to deal with those elements and glosses over them is missing--What? No, I swear it's real! I'm not making it up...I'm pretty sure..."

I had forgotten how many parallels there were between this movie and the Toy Story trilogy. But, after going to see Toy Story 3 in the theater, I was telling my companion I thought was the best movie of the three. As reasons I cited both the torture scene and the scene where all the main characters are literally facing death in the form of a hellish inferno, and I brought up this Christmas special (along with my usual “Jim Henson understood that children can handle death and sadness in stories and need to have it present in stories to help them understand that everyone children-and-adults-alike-struggle-with-the-same-fears-and-heartbreaks-when loved-ones-die-or-get-sick-or-blah blah blah”) as the last example I could recall of a kids' movie putting such adorable characters in a situation where they confront their own mortality.

I was about to conclude with my rant about how kids need to have death and sadness in their stories, but then I remembered that I typed it as a parenthetical aside not one minute ago.

So I'll just say thanks for proving to me that this amazing film actually existed. I'm gonna buy it through your link.
